2008 AFMS Program Competition Winner. By Andreas Ruben, Miami Valley Mineral and Gem Club (Midwest Federation). 2004 AFMS Program Competition Winner. Specimens of petrified wood may include details that can tell about conditions under which the material was fossilized. Insects or other animals that may have attacked or used the wood as a home. Other features such as stress may also be found. Details can be examined to determine the species and structures of plants that lived millions of years ago. (28 minutes) Good reviews.

DVD19     VIRGIN VALLEY OPALS
By Nick Ruebeek (Rookie Rock Rollers, CFMS).   After a family trip to Virgin Valley, NF, Nick prepared this presentation for his fellow junior club members showing what he had seen, learned, and found at this classic location.   It is very brief; but adults will also appreciate the Geology, how opals are collected and some specimens found there.  (4 minutes; short but good info!)    Suggest pairing with DVD3-UMOONA .
DVD20 - BARITE : THE GANGUE'S ALL HERE
Winner of the 2009 AFMS Program Competition by Larry Havens
(Littleton G&MC, RMFMS).      Using his competitive Barite exhibit as a starting point, Larry shares his interest in this essential mineral.   With basic information, a dash of humor (note the title) and then a selection of specimens from around the country and around the world .   It's varied crystal habits and uses add to the story.   (30 minutes)
DVD21     ROMANIA'S MINES AND Minerals
Winner 2009 Program Competition by Michael Shaw (Stillwater M&GS, RMFMS).  Although Romanian minerals are not commonly available in the U.S., many world class specimens including somerare varieties have been produced during its long mining history.  Some history, location maps, images depicting Romania's mineral diversity, and views of mines round out the presentation. DVD22     USGS: NOT JUST ROCKS -EARTH SCIENCE CAREERS
What is the USGS and what kind of work do they do?  As the title says,
it's not just rocks! Biologists, engineers, cartographers, chemists and other professionals work indoors and out, here in the United States and in other countries exploring, documenting and protecting the natural world. Some of them even get to go fishing "on the job"!   (15 minutes)

Scientists and a paleo artist team up to discover the truth about T-rcx and create an accurate, fully skinned mechanical replica of a walking juvenile. Previously unknown facts are revealed in the process.

Travel the globe with renowned paleontologists who recover lesser known, very unusual dinosaurs, some with seemingly strange appendages. Can we learn their purpose? Are they evolutionary "dead ends"?
